THE FIRST TWO THINGS BEFORE ACTING

“The first thing to do—don’t get worked up. For everything happens according to the nature of all things, and in a short time you’ll be nobody and nowhere, even as the great emperors Hadrian and Augustus are now. The next thing to do—consider carefully the task at hand for what it is, while remembering that your purpose is to be a good human being. Get straight to doing what nature requires of you, and speak as you see most just and fitting—with kindness, modesty, and sincerity.”

- MARCUS AURELIUS, MEDITATIONS

Summary:
Marcus Aurelius advises that before taking any action, we should first calm ourselves, recognising the transient nature of life. Then, we should clearly understand the task before us and act according to our purpose—to be a good person—speaking and behaving with kindness, humility, and honesty.

Interpretation:
In real life, this means when faced with a challenge or decision, pause to steady your emotions rather than reacting impulsively. Remind yourself that life is brief and everyone is equal in the end, including great leaders. Then focus on doing what is right and necessary with integrity and compassion. Stoicism teaches that by managing your mindset first, you set the stage for wise and virtuous action.
