JUST DON’T MAKE THINGS WORSE

“How much more harmful are the consequences of anger and grief than the circumstances that aroused them in us!”

- MARCUS AURELIUS, MEDITATIONS

Summary:
Marcus Aurelius points out that the damage caused by our anger and grief often exceeds the harm of the actual events that triggered those emotions. In other words, how we react can make a situation far worse than it originally was.

Interpretation:
In everyday life, this means that when something upsetting happens—like a disagreement, a failure, or bad news—our emotional response can escalate the problem unnecessarily. The Daily Stoic encourages us to recognise this tendency and manage our reactions with calm and reason. Instead of letting anger or sorrow take control, we should strive to respond thoughtfully, preventing those feelings from deepening our suffering or causing further harm to ourselves and others.
