DO YOUR JOB

“Whatever anyone does or says, for my part I’m bound to the good. In the same way an emerald or gold or purple might always proclaim: ‘whatever anyone does or says, I must be what I am and show my true colors.”

- MARCUS AURELIUS, MEDITATIONS

Summary:
Marcus Aurelius affirms that no matter what others say or do, we must remain true to our nature and values. Just as gold doesn’t stop being gold, we must consistently act with integrity and virtue.

Interpretation:
In the context of The Daily Stoic, this quote is a reminder to stay anchored in our principles despite external chaos or negativity. Life will present rudeness, injustice, or ignorance, but that doesn’t excuse us from our role. Whether it’s being kind, honest, or just, a Stoic does their duty regardless of how others behave. Like an emerald doesn’t lose its brilliance because it’s surrounded by dull stones, we shouldn’t let others pull us away from who we are. Being true to yourself, especially when it’s difficult, is the essence of Stoic strength.
