THE CARDS WE’RE DEALT

“Think of the life you have lived until now as over and, as a dead man, see what’s left as a bonus and live it according to Nature. Love the hand that fate deals you and play it as your own, for what could be more fitting?”

- MARCUS AURELIUS, MEDITATIONS

Summary
Marcus Aurelius urges us to view the past as gone and consider the future as an unexpected gift, to be cherished and lived with purpose. He advises embracing the circumstances handed to us by fate and approaching life with acceptance and alignment with nature’s order. By doing so, we honour our existence and make the best of what remains.

Interpretation
In real life, this means letting go of regrets and what we cannot change, instead focusing on what we can control: our attitude and actions. If you’ve read The Daily Stoic, you might recognise this as a call to radical acceptance and gratitude. For instance, if life throws challenges your way, don’t resist or resent them—see them as opportunities to grow and respond virtuously. It’s about playing the “cards” you’re dealt with courage and grace, understanding that this approach leads to inner peace and fulfilment.
