LIFE IS LONG— IF YOU KNOW HOW TO USE IT

“It’s not at all that we have too short a time to live, but that we
squander a great deal of it. Life is long enough, and it’s given in
sufficient measure to do many great things if we spend it well. But
when it’s poured down the drain of luxury and neglect, when it’s
employed to no good end, we’re finally driven to see that it has
passed by before we even recognised it passing. And so it is-we
don’t receive a short life; we make it so.”

- SENECA, ON THE BREVITY OF LIFE

Summary

Seneca argues that life is not inherently short but that we waste much of it through indulgence and neglect. If we focus on meaningful pursuits and use our time wisely, we can accomplish great things. The problem lies in how we spend our time, not in its duration.

Interpretation

In real life, this quote serves as a wake-up call to evaluate how we use our time. For readers of The Daily Stoic, it reinforces the importance of living intentionally. Rather than allowing distractions or shallow pleasures to drain our time, we should prioritise what truly matters—personal growth, meaningful relationships, and virtuous actions. By doing so, we ensure that our time is well spent and that we don’t look back with regret at a life squandered.
