CIRCUMSTANCES HAVE NO CARE FOR OUR FEELINGS

“You shouldn’t give circumstances the power to rouse anger, for they don’t care at all.”

- MARCUS AURELIUS, MEDITATIONS

Summary:

Marcus Aurelius reminds us that external events are indifferent to our emotions—they have no intention or concern for how we feel. If we allow circumstances to dictate our reactions, we give them unnecessary power over us. Instead of becoming angry or upset over things outside our control, we should recognise that our emotional responses are our own responsibility.

Interpretation:

In real life, this means understanding that frustration, anger, or disappointment do not change reality. If we get stuck in traffic, face criticism, or experience setbacks, reacting with anger only harms us—it does nothing to alter the situation. Accepting that external events are neutral and focussing on our response choices allows us to regain control over our peace of mind. The key to resilience is shifting from emotional reactivity to calm acceptance, ensuring that no circumstance has the power to disturb our inner stability.
