DON’T HIDE FROM YOUR FEELINGS

“It’s better to conquer grief than to deceive it.”

- SENECA, ON CONSOLATION TO HELVIA

Summary
Seneca emphasises the importance of confronting and overcoming grief honestly rather than avoiding or masking it. True healing comes from addressing the root of our pain and finding strength in the process, rather than pretending the pain doesn’t exist or distracting ourselves from it.

Interpretation
In real life, this means acknowledging and processing emotions instead of suppressing them. If you’ve read The Daily Stoic, you’ll recognise this as a reminder to face life’s difficulties with courage and wisdom. For example, after losing a loved one, instead of burying yourself in work or distractions, allow yourself to feel the pain and reflect on it. Through this, you can find clarity and grow stronger, rather than letting unprocessed grief resurface later in harmful ways. Conquering grief is about resilience, not avoidance.
